Compassionate Individualized Care
The Village midwifery model is strongly grounded in principles of respect, autonomy, and reproductive justice for expecting individuals. Infant Craniosacral Therapy
What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)?
CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners support the craniosacral system in improving the functioning of the central nervous system by complementing the body's natural healing processes.
What is a typical session like?
Children rest fully clothed on a massage table or in my lap or their parent’s lap. Sometimes children sit, crawl, walk, stand or play with toys on the floor during the treatment. They don’t need to hold still.
I adapt my techniques to the attention span and needs of the child. I monitor the craniosacral rhythm with my hands. I conduct other gentle assessments and correct the sources of pain and dysfunction using gentle manipulative techniques.
Sometimes children release emotions or cry during treatments, but the techniques do not hurt babies and children. Seldom does the pressure exceed five grams (the weight of a nickel). The work is very gentle.
CST treatment sets the stage for the body to most efficiently use its own power to heal. Most children find the sessions to be deeply relaxing. Babies and children will often sleep for a longer stretch than usual after a session.
Craniosacral Therapy Can Help:
▪ Fussy, hard to soothe babies
▪Babies who seem uncomfortable in their bodies
▪Babies who have digestive or elimination difficulties
▪Babies who favor turning their heads to one side
▪Babies who favor one breast or position for nursing
▪Babies who seem overly sensitive
▪Babies who hate tummy time
▪Children who have mobility issues
▪Children who have sensory issues
▪Children who have vision issues
Here For You
A Monitrice is an experienced guide who offers support and assistance to birthing couples. The word “monitrice” is French for monitor; coach; instructor. A Monitrice is a hybrid between a doula and a midwife who is trained to provide support, not only during childbirth, but throughout your pregnancy and postpartum. A Monitrice can assist couples who are planning a hospital birth. A monitrice is especially beneficial for planning a Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) or for first time parents.
What does a Monitrice do?
A monitrice is an informed consumer advocate and labor coach who will work with you in the hospital to achieve your optimal childbirth experience. She can help you choose the physician and facility that will permit you to have the type of birth experience you would like to have. She can help you write a birth plan to assure that your wishes for your birth and the care of your newborn are honored. By spending time with you throughout pregnancy, she can provide supplemental prenatal care which can tell your baby’s position, and provide you with information about nutrition, exercise and activity during pregnancy. To avoid arriving at the hospital too early, she will support you in your home during early labor. After your birth, your monitrice will continue care during the postpartum period, providing assistance with breastfeeding as well as monitoring you for postpartum depression.
Who needs a Monitrice?
Every pregnant woman can benefit from the experienced support of a Monitrice during pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum period. A Monitrice is particularly useful for first-time mothers, women planning a VBAC, and women who have strong negative associations with previous births. A Monitrice is useful for anyone who desires a natural, unmedicated birth.
